📄 How to Request a Benefit Verification Letter from SSA Over the Phone
If you need a Benefit Verification Letter from the Social Security Administration (SSA)—especially if you don’t have internet access or find it difficult to create an online account—there’s a simple automated phone option available.
☎️ Call the SSA National Call Center
- Phone: 1-800-772-1213
- TTY: 1-800-325-0778
- Availability: 24/7, in English and Spanish
🗣️ What to Say
When prompted by the automated system:
- Say “Proof of Income” when asked what you need.
- The system may offer to help you create an online account or send a link by text. Say “No” to proceed with the automated process.
🕒 What Happens Next
- The system will guide you through a short identity verification process (about 4 minutes).
- You’ll be asked to confirm your Name, Social Security Number, and Date of Birth.
- Once verified, SSA will mail your Benefit Verification Letter to the address they have on file.
📬 Important Address Note
If you’ve recently moved, make sure your address is updated with the U.S. Postal Service. SSA and USPS share address updates through a data exchange, so updating with USPS ensures SSA has your current address.
⚠️ BPQY Requests
Please note: A Benefit Verification Letter is not the same as a Benefits Planning Query (BPQY). SSA is currently not processing BPQY requests due to the ongoing shutdown.
